Chapter 11: The Other Side of Silence

"Sometimes silence is not the absence of words. Sometimes it is everything someone couldn't say." Smart had always thought that silence was easier. Not better. Not happier. Just easier. Because when there were no words... There were no explanations. There were no questions. There were no chances to disappoint someone. But lately... Silence had become heavier than anything he had ever carried before. The apartment was quiet. Too quiet. Smart stood in the kitchen, holding a cup of coffee in his hands. For several seconds, he didn't move. Two cups. That was the problem. He had made two cups. Again. A habit his body remembered before his mind did. He looked at the second cup sitting on the counter. A small, sad smile appeared on his lips. "Old habits..." He whispered to himself. Then he poured the second cup of coffee away. Months had passed. Long enough for people to believe everything was fine. Long enough for the world to keep moving. Long enough for the people around him to stop asking questions. Because Smart was good at making people believe he was okay. He always had been. At work, he smiled. At events, he smiled. During interviews, he answered calmly. Everyone saw the same Smart. The same person they had always known. Professional. Kind. Composed. But nobody saw what happened after the cameras turned off. Nobody saw him sitting alone in his apartment, staring at his phone without opening any messages. Nobody saw how many times he typed something... And deleted it. Because he still didn't know what he was allowed to say. That afternoon, Smart returned home earlier than usual. The apartment was the way he had left it. Clean. Organized. Silent. Almost too organized. Boom used to say his apartment looked like a place where nobody actually lived. Smart remembered the first time he heard it: "Your house looks like a hotel." "That's not necessarily a bad thing." "It is." Smart had looked at him, confused. "Why?" Boom had smiled. "Because homes are supposed to have signs that someone is happy there." At the time... Smart hadn't understood. Now he did. He walked toward a shelf near the living room. There was a small box there. A box that had traveled with him when he left. When he moved away to another city, he didn't take many things. Not because they weren't important... But because some things hurt too much to decide what to do with. But that small box... That was something he couldn't leave behind. It had remained closed for months. Not because he didn't want to remember. But because he remembered too much. Slowly, he picked it up. He sat on the floor. And opened it. Inside were small things. A photograph. A ticket from a place they had visited together. A small note written in Boom's handwriting. Nothing important. And yet... Everything important. Smart touched the note carefully. He remembered how easily Boom expressed his feelings. How he could turn ordinary moments into memories. How he could make a normal day feel special. Smart had always admired that. But he had never known how to say it. He closed his eyes. And for the first time in a long time... He allowed himself to admit something. He missed him. Not just the big moments. Not just the celebrations. The small ones. The ordinary ones. The moments that once seemed insignificant. He missed hearing Boom walking around the apartment. The way he talked about random things. The way he filled every empty space without even trying. Smart missed that noise. Because he had never imagined... How lonely silence could become. His phone vibrated. A message from work. Another schedule. Another meeting. Another responsibility. Smart looked at the screen. Then placed the phone aside. He wanted to answer. He always wanted to answer. But sometimes... He was tired of pretending everything was normal. That night, he sat by the window. The city lights reflected against the glass. A city that wasn't his home. Not completely. He wondered where Boom was. What he was doing. If he was sleeping enough. If he was eating properly. If someone was reminding him to rest. The thought made him smile sadly. Because even after everything... His mind still went to the same place. To Boom. Smart looked down at his hands. The same hands that had held Boom's. The same hands that had wanted to protect him. The same hands that couldn't reach him when he needed them the most. "I tried..." The words came out quietly. Not as an excuse. But as a confession. "I really tried." But trying in silence... Had never been enough. And finally... He understood that. Later that night, Smart picked up his phone. There were hundreds of notifications. Messages. Mentions. Updates. He didn't check them. Not yet. Instead, he opened the music app. He needed something to fill the silence. Any song. Anything. Because sometimes music was easier than his own thoughts. He put on his headphones. The first song started playing. And for a moment... He closed his eyes. He remembered something Boom had told him once: "Music can find people when words can't." At the time, Smart had smiled. He thought it was just another emotional sentence from Boom. But now... Now he wondered if maybe Boom had always understood something he didn't. Maybe some things weren't meant to be explained. Maybe some things were meant to travel. Across distance. Across time. Across everything left unsaid. Thousands of kilometers away... A song was waiting. A song Smart didn't know existed. A song written by the person he still thought about every day. And without knowing it... Smart was getting closer to hearing the words Boom never managed to say End of Chapter Eleven.
