Chapter 15: Words That Cross the Threshold

The bustle of the Blue Window Café faded into a soft background hum, reduced entirely to the steady clink of a spoon against ceramic and the low murmur of the afternoon street outside.

For several long moments, neither Smart nor Boom spoke.
They simply remained anchored to the back table by the window, caught in the quiet shock of reality after months of screens, time zones, and unsaid things.
Boom’s fingers were still trembling slightly around his half-empty coffee cup, the initial wave of surprise slowly giving way to a profound, overwhelming relief.

Smart didn't rush him.
He kept his hand resting flat on the warm wooden table, just inches away from Boom's, giving him all the time in the world to process the fact that the distance was finally over.
Behind the counter, P'Anong watched them with a quiet, knowing look. Without making a sound, she picked up a small tray holding a fresh latte and a plate overflowing with butter cookies, walking over to their table with unhurried grace.
"For the traveler," P'Anong said softly, setting the steaming cup down right in front of Smart alongside the extra cookies, her eyes crinkling at the corners with motherly warmth. "And for you, son, another refill so you stop looking like you've seen a ghost."
Boom let out a shaky, watery laugh, wiping a stray tear quickly from his cheek. "Thank you, P'Anong."
She offered a gentle, reassuring nod, patted Smart's shoulder briefly as if welcoming him back to where he belonged, and quietly retreated back to the counter, leaving them to their sanctuary.
Smart looked down at the fresh cup of coffee, then up at Boom, a soft, self-deprecating smile touching his lips.
"I guess I owe you an apology for crashing your afternoon," Smart murmured, his voice low and tender. "And for not calling before I got on the plane. My manager is probably having a complete meltdown in another country right now."
Boom finally managed to lower his cup, finding the courage to meet Smart's steady gaze. The fear that had weighed on his chest for weeks was gone, replaced by the familiar, grounding warmth of Smart's presence.
"You left everything behind just because of a song?" Boom asked, his voice barely above a whisper, needing to hear it again to believe it.
"I left everything behind because it was you," Smart answered without a single second of hesitation. "When I heard the music... when I heard your voice telling me that I didn't have to carry everything alone, that it was okay to fall... it felt like you were standing right in front of me, pulling me back.
I couldn't stay away, Boom. Not for another minute." Boom's breath hitched. Hearing Smart say those words—acknowledging the exact message woven into the rhythm—tore down the last remaining walls between them. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded, slightly worn piece of paper, sliding it gently across the table toward Smart.
Smart blinked, looking down at the paper. Even before touching it, he recognized the texture and the familiar handwriting. It was the letter he had left behind in his studio months ago, before the departure that nearly broke them both.
"I found this," Boom said softly, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "The day after you left. I read every single word, Smart. At first... at first I thought it was a final goodbye. I thought you were locking me out to protect me." Smart picked up the paper with slightly trembling fingers, unfolding it to look at his own desperate, late-night handwriting. A heavy ache tugged at his chest, remembering how lost he had felt when he wrote it. "I didn't know how to ask for help," Smart confessed, his voice thickening with emotion. "I thought being strong meant dealing with my battles in complete silence. I was so afraid of dragging you down into my mess."
"And that's why I wrote the song," Boom interrupted gently, leaning forward over the table so their knees almost touched. "Your letter told me you were drowning in silence. I couldn't fly over there and fix your schedule or fight your battles, Smart. But I could write something that would cross any ocean. I wanted you to know that even if you were miles away, my door was never closed to you."
Smart stared at the letter in his hands, then looked up at Boom, seeing the immense love and fierce loyalty shining in his eyes. The dots connected fully: his desperate plea written in ink, answered by Boom's melody riding across the airwaves. They had been speaking the exact same language all along, just separated by fear and distance. Smart carefully folded the paper back up and set it down, sliding his hand across the wood until his fingers finally brushed against Boom's. Without a second thought, Boom turned his hand over, intertwining their fingers tightly, anchoring their palms together.
"We're terrible at communicating when we're apart," Smart whispered, a faint, fond smile playing on his lips. "Then let's never be apart again," Boom replied instantly, his voice firm, clearing away any lingering shadows. Smart squeezed his hand, his eyes bright with absolute certainty. "Deal."
Sitting there in the corner of the Blue Window Café, surrounded by the familiar scent of coffee and the gentle afternoon light, the long winter of their silence finally melted away. They didn't need grand speeches or complex resolutions anymore. The song had brought them home, the letter had cleared the air, and for the first time in a very long time, the future looked entirely bright
